Justyna designs dreamy, floral and very imaginative patterns for wallpapers, fabrics, wall hangings and artefacts. They are hand printed using eco friendly materials. She collaborates with fashion, interior and set designers.
This is where I see my wallpapers naturally expanding - form home walls to all sorts of homeware objects, fabric and potentially to some kind of installations which could be used in a music/film setting.
At this stage of my process I am focusing on drawing and painting my elements. They will be then scanned and digitally arranged in a pattern to be later on printed out digitally. I am thinking of adding some hand printing to the designs, but in a form of an accent or an appliqué to my printed design.
I really enjoy screen print and use it more as a technique for illustration. I would like to produce some poster size pattern prints, but not whole rolls of wallpapers solely screen printed. I quite enjoy working on small elements and them joining them into a bigger arrangement. Actually, it is a very convenient way of making my practice adjustable to any work settings- I can work from home, from my desk, I can even take my work with me. To make a base design all I need are paints, scanner and a computer/iPad. Once a pattern is ready, I can then take it to a next level with hand printed elements (probably foil transfer; flocking I tried earlier on this year), and/or create installations with it. This is when I would need access to printing facilities. Since the latter part of the process would be a custom build up, it wouldn't be essential for me to have a regular access to printing studios.
I am intending on producing 3 versions of my floral wallpaper during this course:
-hand painted and digitally printed wallpaper ;
-the above wallpaper with hand printed elements:
-the above wallpaper plus elements growing out of it and repeating pattern in a 3d space;
Justyna has quite a few years of experience, gives lectures and offers classes in pattern design( http://handscreenprinting.uk/ ). It is really eye opening to look through her collaborations and exhibitions to see how many possibilities are out there for those who are willing to focus on pattern professionally.
