In order to create my pattern I will be painting/drawing each flower/leaves/branches separately and then assemble them in a pattern digitally once all my work is scanned in and edited.
I am starting with a rose. The picture below shows the first finished version:

It was painted with acrylics and then drawn onto with coloured pencils.
In my painting I was trying to focus on value and translate it to colour more or less precisely. Sometimes I would take a picture of work in progress to check how it looks in black and white and how the values are really unfolding( as colours might be deceiving at times):

The top right rose was the one where I tried to be more precise with values. I found it challenging to depict details and left it as it was at this stage. To finish off the paint I very quickly applied it to another rose-I chose not to be perfect and put down paint not necessarily according to values in reference photo. I wanted to experiment and see whats possible. As I wanted more detail, I decide to go for more precise mark coming from coloured pencils. I really enjoyed adding this layer- I like the variety of lines and how one can see the paint coming through it in many different ways. I was trying to bring more resemblance of the photo colour wise by darkening or lightening certain areas.

I was disappointed with the result initially, but after a break I actually came to like it and decided to apply the same technique to my first flower:

This result made me happy. I decided to keep going this way with the rest of elements.

I had one more go with the same rose trying to focus more on reds and pinks this time:

Here's the result on A2 paper:

Way to go!
